At a meeting of allotment holders and gardeners held
at the Stevenage Letchmore Road School on Wednesday last week, and
convened by the County War Agricultural Executive Committee in conjunction
with the Stevenage Urban Council it was decided to form an Allotment
and Gardeners Association, and 46 members were enrolled.
Mr J. A. Marsden Popple presided and introduced Mr. E. R. Saltmarsh,
the County Horticultural Superintendent, who congratulated the allotment
holders of Stevenage on on the excellent way in which their plots
were kept. He said that in his travels over a wide area of the County
he did not think he had seen better.
He also outlined the advantages accruing from the formation of
an allotment holders association. and pointed out that the Governments'
scheme for the distribution of lime was only worked through allotment
societies, and the fact that under the scheme lime could be obtained
at 1s. 3d. per cwt. made that alone a worth while reason for forming
an association.
